If you suffer from endentulism, you're not alone. Statistics show that roughly 35 million American's don't have any permanent teeth remaining. If you've decided on removable dentures as a way to replace your missing teeth, you'll need to provide them with proper care. With proper maintenance and care, you can avoid common problems often associated with denture use. Here are three suggestions that will help you keep your mouth healthy, and your dentures in good condition.

Keep Them Clean

Now that you have dentures, it's important that you keep them as clean as possible. Without proper cleaning, your dentures can harbor germs and bacteria that can lead to problems inside your mouth. The germs and bacteria can also cause foul odors to develop. The best way to keep your dentures clean is to brush them twice a day and soak them overnight.

Brush your dentures using a denture brush and toothpaste before you put them in each morning, and after you take them out each night. Soak them overnight in a peroxide and baking soda bath. Place one tablespoon of baking soda in your denture bowl. Set your dentures in the bowl and cover them with peroxide. In the morning, rinse the solution off your dentures and then brush them. This will keep your dentures clean, and free of bacteria and germs.

Get Them Adjusted

You might not realize this, but if your dentures don't fit right you could end up with jaw pain and headaches. You can also develop sores in your mouth, which can become infected if not treated properly. To keep your dentures fitting properly, you should have them adjusted by the dentist at least once a year. If your dentures slip while you're chewing, or while you're speaking, they need to be adjusted. If you develop sores under your dentures, you should have them looked at by your dentist, especially if they become painful.

See Your Dentist

Even if you've lost all your permanent teeth, you still need to see your dentist on a regular basis. Your dentist will check your mouth for signs of problems, such as gum sores, and oral cancers. To ensure healthy gums, and to monitor the condition of your dentures, you should see your dentist at least twice a year.
